| The Deserving: What the Lives of the Condemned Reveal about American Justice | Fri, Nov 20, 12:00 AM UTC | Pilsen Community Books, Chicago | 3mxjwgveagz22 | Curator | Join the Invisible Institute for a conversation around The Deserving: What the Lives of the Condemned Reveal About American Justice with the author and mitigation specialist Elizabeth Vartkessian. Elizabeth isn't part of the Innocence Project; her clients are often legally guilty, and often of terrible crimes. Rather, her job is to spend hundreds of hours per case talking to the parents, siblings, teachers, and neighbors of a defendant, situating their crimes in context. The Deserving challenges us to move beyond dominant narratives about criminality and rehabilitation into a deeper understanding of accountability. About Elizabeth Vartkessian Mitigation specialist Elizabeth Vartkessian has been investigating the life histories of those facing the most severe penalties possible in the United States since 2004. She is the author of The Deserving: What the Lives of the Condemned Reveal About American Justice published by Bloomsbury in January 2026. Elizabeth holds a PhD in law and an MS in comparative social policy from the University of Oxford, and BAs in philosophy and political science from the George Washington University. She is the founder and executive director of Advancing Real Change Inc., a national nonprofit dedicated to conducting life history investigations in criminal cases. She lives in Baltimore. About Invisible Institute The Invisible Institute is a journalism production organization on the South Side of Chicago. We work to enhance the capacity of citizens to hold public institutions accountable. Among the tactics we employ are investigative reporting, multimedia storytelling, human rights documentation, the curation of public information, and the orchestration of difficult public conversations. Our work coheres around a central principle: we as citizens have co-responsibility with the government for maintaining respect for human rights and, when abuses occur, for demanding redress. The Invisible Institute formed to combat official secrecy by ensuring the public has access to police misconduct records and rigorous reporting, both crucial for communities to be able to challenge state-sanctioned violence. For nearly a decade, our founder Jamie Kalven reported from within high-rise public housing. Jamie’s journalism sparked a series of federal civil rights lawsuits, including a landmark 2014 case, Kalven v. Chicago, which made police misconduct records public across Illinois. The Invisible Institute formed and launched the Civic Police Data Project (CPDP.co) one year later, making hundreds of thousands of police records widely available. The power of our reporting has been repeatedly recognized by our peers. Our fifteen-person newsroom has won three Pulitzer Prizes for our reporting on race and the criminal justice system. Our work continues to be centered on Black neighborhoods on the South and West Sides of Chicago—the communities most acutely affected by patterns of abusive, unconstitutional policing. | |||

| Rehearsing the Future: The Thought and Practice of James and Grace Lee Boggs | Sun, Nov 15, 11:00 PM UTC | Pilsen Community Books, Chicago | 3mxjwgvfyb622 | Curator | James and Grace Lee Boggs famously implored us to "change ourselves to change the world." But what are we to make of their far-reaching philosophy of social change, which they called dialectical humanism? How might we continue to learn with and from the Boggses today? Join us as we join Under the Tree Podcast to celebrate the release of Michael Doan's new book, Rehearsing the Future: The Thought and Practice of James and Grace Lee Boggs. The discussion will be facilitated by Bill Ayers, renowned activist, engaged scholar, and author of numerous books on social justice and education. Rehearsing the Future explores the work and legacy of James and Grace Lee Boggs, two of the most influential American radical thinkers of the twentieth century. Grace Lee Boggs earned a PhD in philosophy in the 1940s, though facing obstacles to an academic career as a young Chinese American woman, she left and became a political organizer in Detroit, where she met and married James Boggs, a Black autoworker and labor organizer from Alabama who had moved North during the Great Migration. Over the course of more than forty years of partnership and participation in labor, civil rights, Black Power, anticolonial, and feminist movements, the Boggses articulated a philosophy of long-term revolutionary strategy they called “dialectical humanism.” Rejecting state socialism and traditional Marxism, dialectical humanism instead attributes social change to the conscious, collective activity of people engaged in place-based organizing with a view to transforming everyday life, with hallmark projects such as community gardens, daycare networks, and mediation programs. Above all, revolution is not a fixed program but must evolve as ideas, movements, and institutions are changed through collective practice. Through their life work and publications, James and Grace Lee Boggs modeled how to do philosophy from within movements. In Rehearsing the Future, Michael Doan lays out the intellectual history of dialectical humanism, the far-reaching theory and practice that continues to guide movement-building around the world, inspiring forms of activism such as visionary organizing and emergent strategy. This book is for scholars and activists interested in the theoretical underpinnings of today's community movements. Michael D. Doan is a Canadian-born father, educator, activist, and philosopher. He joined the James and Grace Lee Boggs Center to Nurture Community Leadership in 2016 and is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Oakland University. | |||

| Reading the World: Paulo Freire in Angicos | Sat, Oct 31, 12:00 AM UTC | Chicago Filmmakers, Chicago | 3mxjwgvjpy222 | Curator | In 1963, global icon Paulo Freire led an experimental project teaching hundreds of rural farmers to read, write and vote in Brazil, until he was arrested and forced into exile during a U.S.-backed coup d'état.Told through the collective memories of farmers, students, and educators who participated in the “Culture Circles," where they learned to read and write in 40 hours, Reading the World contains rare archival footage of 1960s Brazil that was recently recovered after being buried for decades. The innovative teaching method used critical and creative thinking instead of memorization and repetition. By contextualizing and personalizing the lessons, educators used their surroundings to teach vocabulary and construct meaning. Hundreds of Brazilians became literate and were allowed to vote as a consequence, strengthening the blossoming democracy and social movement that was disrupting the colonial structures. After a shocking coup d’état, the farmers’ notebooks were set on fire, and Freire was eventually forced into exile for 16 years, spreading his pedagogy around the globe and impacting democracy and education until today. Today Freire is considered one of the most influential philosophers of education in the twentieth century, and revered by educators. | |||

| American Socialist: The Life & Legacy of Eugene V. Debs | Fri, Oct 30, 12:00 AM UTC | Pilsen Community Books, Chicago | 3mxjwgvpaw422 | Curator | Former Jacobin editor Shawn Gude presents a stunning portrait of Eugene V. Debs, the railroad worker turned radical visionary whose leadership during the Gilded Age inspired the working class to fight back against the power of the rich—and speaks to our own Gilded Age, when the ultra-wealthy again rule America’s political and economic life. Shawn Gude in conversation with Alderman Anthony Quezada presents American Socialist: The Life and Legacy of Eugene V. Debs. There was a time, a little more than 100 years ago, when some 1,200 Socialists held elected office across the United States. Ministers in Oklahoma preached the gospel of “Christian socialism” at revival-style gatherings come summertime. And Eugene V. Debs—part working-class agitator, part radical prophet—received nearly a million votes when he ran for president from behind bars. Before Bernie Sanders, before Zohran Mamdani, Eugene Debs was America’s favorite socialist—part working-class agitator, part radical prophet. Rousing, poignant, and intimately human, American Socialist is a striking portrait of one man’s radicalization—and of the country he radicalized in turn. Gude reads from and discusses the book with democratic socialist alderman Anthony Quezada before an audience Q&A and signing. Shawn Gude is a former editor at Jacobin and the author of American Socialist: The Life and Legacy of Eugene V. Debs. He was born and raised in Iowa. Alderman Anthony Quezada is a lifelong Chicagoan, community organizer, and public servant. He served for more than six years as the 35th Ward Neighborhood Services Director before being elected to the Cook County Board of Commissioners in 2022, becoming the first democratic socialist elected to the Board. In 2025, he was appointed Alderman of Chicago’s 35th Ward, where he has focused on delivering funding for affordable housing, strengthening tenant protections, and protecting our immigrant neighbors from ICE. Anthony is an endorsed Chicago Democratic Socialists of America candidate for Alderman in the February 23, 2027 election. | |||
| Troop Movements | Sun, Oct 25, 8:00 PM UTC | Pilsen Community Books, Chicago | 3mxjwgvq4hv22 | Curator | Join us as we welcome Tejasvi Nagaraja and Gabriel Winant to the store for an conversation about Nagaraja's book Troop Movements: Labor, Race, and Global Freedom Struggles in America's World War II, the story of how the mass mobilization for World War II catalyzed the national and international political movements and conflicts of the postwar period. In the popular imagination, World War II is perceived as the last great moment of national consensus, when the United States was united around the collective purpose of battling a clear enemy whose aim was global dominance. The government led an unprecedented mobilization, building an international military force through which the country soon became the preeminent world power. In the context of this mobilization, the military brought together disparate sectors of workers, all of whom were enmeshed in struggles over workers’ rights and civil rights in the wake of the Great Depression and New Deal. In Troop Movements, Tejasvi Nagaraja explains how this mobilization for world war—involving soldiers and defense workers—provided an opportunity for entangled experiences and alliances across race, class, and global concerns. In the process, this anti-fascist mobilization and the reactions to it catalyzed the national and international political movements and conflicts of the postwar period. Many of these diverse war workers, Nagaraja contends, led a “greatest generation” of labor, Black freedom, and anti-imperial social struggles, which linked racial and economic and international issues. Their struggles took place from Pennsylvania to Panama, Georgia to Germany, Michigan to Manila. | |||
| From Popular Front to Cold War: The Interracial Left and the International Workers Order, 1930–1954 | Sat, Oct 24, 11:00 PM UTC | Pilsen Community Books, Chicago | 3mxjwgvqya722 | Curator | Join us as we welcome Elissa Sampson, Bob Zecker, Felicia Bevel, and Matt Calihman to the store for a discussion of From Popular Front to Cold War: The Interracial Left and the International Workers Order, 1930–1954. From Popular Front to Cold War tells the story of the International Workers Order (IWO), an organization founded in 1930 to provide life, burial, and health insurance to its members. But as the essays gathered by Elissa Sampson and Robert M. Zecker make clear, the IWO broadened its mission to promote interracial solidarity, support labor unions, combat racism and antisemitism, and champion progressive social programs from the Great Depression into the postwar era. At its height, the IWO had almost two hundred thousand members drawn from a broad ethnic and racial spectrum of the working class—Jews, Blacks, Poles, Slovaks, Italians, Hispanics, and others. It operated summer camps, published foreign-language newspapers, and supported a wide range of cultural activities. An early advocate for the United States' entry into World War II, the IWO was also ahead of its time in championing the nascent civil rights movement. After the war, it was declared a subversive organization due to its ties to the Communist Party and disbanded in 1954, though its legacy as a model for working-class cooperation across racial and ethnic differences endures to this day. Felicia Bevel is an Assistant Professor of History at the University of North Florida. Her research and teaching interests include African American history, twentieth century U.S. history, cultural history, southern studies, and childhood studies. Her current research examines early twentieth century American cultural productions that romanticized the Old South and circulated outside the U.S. within the larger Pacific world, specifically in Canada and Australia. In addition to her chapter in From Popular Front to Cold War, her work has recently appeared in the Mississippi Quarterly and the Journal of Transnational American Studies. At UNF, she teaches courses such as the Civil Rights Movement, the Black Pacific, and Blackness in Archives. She is also a faculty team member on the Red Hill Cemetery Project, a collaboration between UNF, the Okefenokee Heritage Center, and the Black Heritage Committee to restore and document the history of a historically African American cemetery in Waycross, GA. Matt Calihman is professor of English at Missouri State University, where he teaches African American literature and other U.S. literature courses. He has published articles and book chapters on Amiri Baraka, Ralph Ellison, Langston Hughes, and John A. Williams, focusing on their relationships to the radical left. The Cambridge Companion to American Poetry and Politics since 1900 (ed. Daniel Morris; 2023) included Matt’s essay on “African American Political Poetries.” He is the co-editor, with Gerald Early, of Approaches to Teaching Baraka’s Dutchman (MLA; 2018) and the co-editor, with Tracy Floreani and A Yęmisi Jimoh, of the Ralph Ellison Special Issue of American Studies (2015). Dr. Elissa Sampson is an urban geographer who studies how the past is actively used to create new spaces of migration, memory, heritage, and activism. She has pursued a life-long interest in migration, diaspora, re-diasporization, and immigrant culture on New York’s Lower East Side, Brooklyn and Paris, making visible dynamic interactions among diasporas in shared spaces/places. As a Lecturer in Cornell University’s Jewish Studies Program, Dr. Sampson has taught labor and gender history, including the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Fire, its memorialization, and relationship to current labor activism. Now a Research Associate, Dr. Sampson has worked extensively with Cornell’s Kheel Center confiscated Cold War archives on the International Workers Order (IWO), including their partial digitization. She co-organized a public, online academic conference, “Di Linke” (the Left), based largely on its archival Jewish Section holdings. She is the co-editor and contributor to From Popular Front to Cold War: The Interracial Left and the International Workers Order, 1930–1954. She is currently researching the early microfilm files that detail the work of the International Labor Defense (ILD), ―the Civil Rights Congress’ (CRC) predecessor―, whose heads worked primarily in New York and Chicago. Robert M. Zecker is a professor of history at Saint Francis Xavier University, Nova Scotia, Canada, where he teaches courses in race, immigration, social movements, and U.S. history. His research includes immigration, radicalism and the popular culture of immigrants on the left. He is the author of five books, including “A Road to Peace and Freedom”: The International Workers Order and the Struggle for Economic Justice and Civil Rights, 1930-1954 (Temple University Press.) He has also contributed book chapters to eight edited volumes, most recently the chapter, “Spotlight on Jim Crow”: Radical Immigrant Papers Cover Race and Civil Rights,” in Immigration and Exile: The Foreign-Language Press in the U.K. and U.S., recently published by Bloomsbury. He has published numerous articles in journals such as the Journal of American Ethnic History, the Journal of the Canadian Historical Association, Oral History Review, Ethnic Forum, American Studies, the Journal of Social History, the Journal of Popular Culture, and American Communist History. Dr. Zecker has presented his research at conferences in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Holland, France, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Finland, Turkey, and Ireland. His current research includes a book manuscript on Communist Party workers’ schools, "Training for the Class Struggle," appearing soon (Inshallah!) from Routledge. Before entering the academic racket, Bob was an ink-stained wretch foisting journalism on an unsuspecting public in his native New Jersey. | |||

| Blood and Politics: History of the White Nationalist Movement from the Margins to the Mainstream | Wed, Oct 14, 11:00 PM UTC | Pilsen Community Books, Chicago | 3mxjwgw6v3r22 | Curator | Join us for a conversation on the paperback release after 17 years of Leonard Zeskind’s Blood and Politics: History of the White Nationalist Movement from the Margins to the Mainstream, a sweeping history of white nationalism’s four-decade rise in America, and how it can help us understand our present moment. Blood and Politics is Leonard Zeskind’s unprecedented sweeping history of white nationalism’s four-decade rise in America. Banned by The U.S. Naval Academy in April 2025, its re-release could not be more timely. Few American writers have been so thoroughly vindicated by events they spent their lives trying to prevent. Blood and Politics is now “essential to the understanding of our present moment” (Boston Globe). Blood and Politics continues to be a relevant compass to understanding the strategies that drive white nationalism forward. Join us for a discussion on how to stop the spread of the white nationalist movement’s racism and bigotry, to protect human rights and to foster real democracy – and to honor Zeskind’s long-time motto: Fighting Nazis’ can be fun! About the Speakers: Carol Smith - Leonard's wife and partner of 46 years - offers reflections on the book and Zeskind's legacy. Devin Burghart - executive director of IREHR, has tracked the movement alongside Zeskind since 1991 About the Author: Leonard Zeskind (1949–2025) spent four decades researching – often in-person – the organizing by the white nationalist movement, from think tanks and publications to armed militia groups and Holocaust deniers. A MacArthur Fellow, he founded the Institute for Research & Education on Human Rights (IREHR) in 1983 to carry the work forward. Blood and Politics, published in 2009, remains the definitive account of the post–Civil Rights era white nationalist movement. An essential study of American racism, Blood and Politics is thorough, careful, and troublingly prescient. | |||

| 2026 Palestine Convention | Thu, Nov 26, 3:00 PM UTC | Tinley Park Convention Center, IL (just south of Chicago) | 3mxjwh4djig22 | Curator | Sponsored by American Muslims for Palestine Save the Date | 19th Annual Palestine Convention Last year, thousands from across the country gathered in Chicago at AMP’s 18th Palestine Convention for what became one of the most powerful and historic Palestine gatherings in the United States. Families, students, activists, scholars, organizers, and allies came together with one shared purpose: to stand firmly for Palestine, amplify the truth, and strengthen our movement for justice. That success was possible because of you. Because you showed up.Because you believed in the mission.Because you refused to stay silent. As we look ahead to 2026, our responsibility to Palestine has only grown more urgent. The genocide in Gaza continues to devastate entire families and communities. Across the West Bank, settler violence and attacks on Palestinian towns are escalating at alarming levels. In Jerusalem, threats against Masjid Al-Aqsa and attempts to erase Palestinian presence and identity continue to intensify. At a time when our people face unprecedented challenges, our communities must come together stronger, louder, and more organized than ever before. That is why we invite you to save the date for: 🇵🇸 AMP’s 19th Palestine Convention📆 November 26–28, 2026📍 Tinley Park Convention Center - just south of Chicago, IL Join thousands from across the nation for a transformative weekend of education, advocacy, inspiration, community building, and collective action for Palestine. | The Robert Poems Book Launch | Thu, Dec 3, 11:30 PM UTC | Pilsen Community Books, Chicago | 3mxjwh4ee4u22 | Curator | To celebrate the arrival of The Robert Poems (Deep Vellum, 2026) by S. Yarberry, a speculative trans history project that reimagines a trans life for William Blake's younger brother, Robert, S. and a band of trans poets from across Chicago will perform their work, staging an intimate and strange conversation on speculation and the trans literary archive. This is a night to gather with and for trans people aiming to ignite the critical role imagination plays in our poetry and, indeed, history. But wait! Before the night ends, stay a moment, everyone is welcome to revel a bit with something sweet, something sparkling. Blending deeply researched historical details with the author’s personal experiences, The Robert Poems playfully and critically imagines a trans literary archive during a period in which transness, as we know it today, is not always readily visible. Robert Blake was a ghostly figure that often visited his brother, William, after Robert’s untimely death at the age of twenty-five—the same age S. Yarberry was when they began their medical transition. This happenstance of transitions, medical and metaphysical, drove Yarberry through a series of poetic explorations culminating in a collection with one question beating at its heart: what if trans history could be built on abundance, rather than scarcity? For fans of Jordy Rosenberg’s Confessions of the Fox and Ruth Padel’s Darwin, The Robert Poems provides a lush landscape for Robert to thrive within, offering a new wellspring for trans pasts and a springboard from which to imagine inventive, expansive trans futures. S. Yarberry (he/they) is a trans poet and scholar. Their poems have appeared in AGNI, Guernica, Gulf Coast, and Indiana Review, among many others. His first book, A Boy in the City, (Deep Vellum, 2022), was the winner of the Foreword INDIES Prize in Poetry. S. is currently a PhD Candidate in English at Northwestern University where he studies William Blake. Based in Chicago, S. runs the literary magazine Tyger Quarterly and hosts the monthly PO Box Poetry reading series. | |||

| Abundance Ball to Support the South Side Birth Center | Thu, Oct 22, 11:00 PM UTC | South Shore Cultural Center, Chicago | 3mxjwh4lb6y22 | Curator | In the 1920’s, Black people facing hardship didn’t wait for someone else to solve their problems. They threw a party. They called it a rent party. Inside crowded apartments, throughout Harlem and other predominantly Black neighborhoods, there was food spread across tables, live music from the locals, and people dancing until the rugs wore thin. Neighbors paid a small fee to enter. And the host stayed housed. Somewhere in the middle of all of it, something powerful happened: the community was taking care of itself, on its own terms. Rent parties were never just about the rent. They were a place for joyful unapologetic Black self expression - a way to turn hardship into abundance. At a time when Black residents faced discriminatory rents and had little access to banks or credit, we built our own infrastructure. We kept each other. That spirit is at the heart of who we are at the Chicago South Side Birth Center. And this October, we’re bringing it back. Join us for an evening of live music, a keynote, spades, dominoes, a seated dinner, and unlimited drinks; all in service of closing our final fundraising gap and opening our doors in 2027. Early bird tickets open August 1st! More details coming soon... 🥰 #AbundanceBall #ChicagoSouthSideBirthCenter #BirthJustice #CommunityCare #SouthSideChicago | |||

Join us for a conversation with two leading voices in the field of epidemiology, Nabarun Dasgupta and Gregg Gonsalves, on their shared experiences in understanding and preventing harms from drug use. Dasgupta and Gonsalves discuss their domestic and international careers in public health, the current overdose epidemic, and delivering care in the midst of the continuing “war on drugs.” Drawing on their experiences working directly with impacted communities, they consider how our current systems fail people who use drugs — and how we can reimagine them to prioritize the people at the center of the drug epidemic. Dr. Nabarun Dasgupta is a street drug scientist at the University of North Carolina whose passion is telling true stories about health with numbers. Since 2002, he has done pioneering work in overdose prevention and addiction treatment. Dr. Gregg Gonsalves is an expert in policy modeling on infectious disease and substance use, as well as the intersection of public policy and health equity. For more than 30 years, he has worked on HIV/AIDS and other global health issues. Nabarun Dasgupta, PhD, MPH, is a street drug scientist at the University of North Carolina, whose passion is telling true stories about health with numbers. At the UNC Opioid Data Lab his team has analyzed over 20,000 street drug samples donated via front line public health organizations, health departments, clinics. He pairs the resulting nuanced understanding of the illicit drug supply with large database analytics on overdose deaths to make sense of shifting drug use patterns. From molecules to populations, his work is deeply rooted in community engagement and amplifying lived experience voices. Since 2002 he has done pioneering work in overdose prevention and addiction treatment. He is a recipient of the 2025 MacArthur Fellowship. In 2023 he was placed on the TIME100 Next list of rising global leaders. Sign up for his newsletter (opioiddata.org) to stay on top of the latest drug trends. Gregg Gonsalves is an expert in policy modeling on infectious disease and substance use, as well as the intersection of public policy and health equity. His research focuses on the use of quantitative models for improving the response to epidemic diseases. For more than 30 years, he worked on HIV/AIDS and other global health issues with several organizations, including the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power, the Treatment Action Group, Gay Men’s Health Crisis, and the AIDS and Rights Alliance for Southern Africa. He is a 2011 graduate of Yale College and received his PhD from Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences/School of Public Health in 2017. He is currently the public health correspondent for The Nation. He is a 2018 MacArthur Fellow. Mary Pounder is the Executive Director at the Comer Family Foundation, which seeds innovative ideas in education, environment, healthcare, and the arts nationwide. She has a passion for advancing equitable health care through harm reduction to prevent overdose and the transmission of HIV and HCV through drug use. As the longest private funder of U.S. harm reduction, the foundation works closely with low barrier rural and urban syringe access programs and serves as a resource for best practices, including advising SAMHSA on its national harm reduction framework published in 2024. Mary serves on the boards of AIDS Foundation of Chicago as Policy and Advocacy Chair, Teens Take on Climate, Global Climate Change Foundation and Comer Family Foundation. In 2020 she co-created the Chicago Racial Justice Pooled Fund which has invested $10 million dollars to Chicago community organizers building and sustaining movements for justice that center Black lives and address anti-Blackness. This commitment continues, with another $15M promised by 2031. Previously, she led UnitedHealthcare’s Central Region Corporate Social Responsibility, National Medicaid implementation & remediation, and mergers/acquisitions in five states. Mary received her master’s in public health at Northern Illinois University. Mary enjoys her downtime by playing folk music and admiring sunrises on Chicago’s lakefront. | Police-Free Schools Teach-in | Sat, Oct 17, 5:00 PM UTC | Liberation Library, Chicago | 3mxjwh4y2wq22 | Curator | Sponsored by BYP100 🚨NEW DATE🚨 Join us and @inournames on Saturday, October 17, from 12:00 - 3:00 p.m. at the Liberation Library for our Police-Free Schools teach-in! Participants will be invited to collaboratively imagine alternate solutions to police responses in common school scenarios. We know that the presence of police (e.g., School Resource Officers) often leads to more harm than solutions that prioritize the well-being of students and their communities. Students deserve and need alternative solutions to school scenarios that address the root causes of such experiences with care, compassion, and love. This teach-in is geared toward high school students, but all are welcome to attend. RSVP: https://forms.gle/g5kdCATFnuwSPaJF7

| A NOOB tries OpenBSD | Thu, Oct 29, 6:00 PM UTC | Vestre Strømkaien, Bergen, Vestland | 3mxjwhg6oy422 | Curator | Bergen (BSD and) Linux User Group fortsetter møteserien “Last Thursday”, i samarbeid med Vizrt. IT-infrastruktur blir stadig mer kompleks. | |||

This isn’t a formal dinner or gala. It’s a party: a chance to gather with old friends and new ones, revisit some of what we’ve built together, and help support what comes next. At PMI, prospering has always meant co-prospering — creating the conditions for artists, organizers, neighbors, and communities to thrive through shared effort and mutual support. None of this work happens alone. Come celebrate history, support the future, and co-prosper with us. We hope to see you soon, buddies! The evening will include: A Screen Printing T-Shirt Workshop, Spinning Wheel Raffle, Tacos, Live Music & more! @coprosperitychicago@lumpenradio@buddy.chicago@lumpen.tv

A few of us were going to (re)read it anyway, so we figured we'd organize a group! We're still getting some logistics figured out, but please RSVP at bit.ly/4hr4FsE or directly in our bio to get updates on the location, supplemental readings, etc.

| The Infrastructure of Compassion: Rethinking Public Health in the Fentanyl Era | Sun, Oct 18, 3:00 PM UTC | 3520 S Halsted St, Chicago | 3mxjwh4sjai22 | Curator | Sponsored by Chicago Humanities Festival MacArthur Fellows Nabarun Dasgupta and Gregg Gonsalves on their life-saving work. In recent years, the opioid epidemic and dangers of fentanyl have dominated headlines, resulting in a greater understanding of those who use drugs. | Who decides when clinical AI is ready for everyone? | Fri, Jan 22, 6:30 PM UTC | – | 3mxjwhf2fd522 | Curator | An AI model can work beautifully for one patient and still fail the community it enters. Testing well can't answer the harder question: when should a system be allowed to become part of someone's care? | |||
| Who should shape the platforms science depends on? | Fri, Dec 4, 5:30 PM UTC | – | 3mxjwhf5ypi22 | Curator | When thousands of researchers depend on the same shared tools, listening to them is one thing. Giving them a real say in how those tools are run is another. For people building, funding, governing, or depending on research infrastructure. | |||

| A NOOB tries OpenBSD | Thu, Oct 29, 6:00 PM UTC | Vestre Strømkaien, Bergen, Vestland | 3mxjwhg6oy422 | Curator | Bergen (BSD and) Linux User Group fortsetter møteserien “Last Thursday”, i samarbeid med Vizrt. IT-infrastruktur blir stadig mer kompleks. | |||
