It is tempting to think of this as the singular date on which India was formed. But India did not come into being all at once. The process of its formation continued long after Independence, as regions were reorganised, boundaries redrawn, and new states created. The stories of India’s states are, in many ways, the story of India itself. States are more than administrative boundaries on a map. They are places where we grow up, build friendships, find work, and make memories. They shape our languages, cultures, identities and our sense of home. Every time a state is created or an existing one is altered, the country and its people are reshaped in the process. In this lecture, we’ll go beyond memorising capitals and marking boundaries on a school atlas. Through stories, historical details and a quiz to get us thinking, we’ll explore the events, ideas and movements that shaped the states we know today. Why was a particular state created? What did its borders look like before? How did language, politics, culture and history influence its formation? And what do these stories tell us about the country we call home? Whether you grew up in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bengal, or somewhere else entirely, there’s a story here that belongs to you. After all, every Indian deserves to know the origin story of their state. **About the Lecturer** Venkataraghavan Srinivasan is a writer and actor whose work spans multiple mediums and genres. In nonfiction, he wrote The Origin Story of India’s States and his forthcoming book, Lights! Camera! Democracy! The Cinematic Politics of Tamil Nadu. He is also the author of the children’s book Brachio and was the first recipient of the Neev Fellowship for Children’s Book Creators. The Universe is expanding, and one quantity, the cosmological constant, has been known to explain why the expansion is speeding up.... until now. New data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) hints that the cosmological constant may not be constant after all. Inspired by the film noir genre, this talk will address what we know about the Universe’s expansion so far, and whether the cosmological constant is dead for good. We will visit the crime scene, flash back through a century of clues, and question the witnesses: galaxies and quasars that each saw the universe at a different moment in time. We will line up the suspects who may or may not have killed the cosmological constant, and cross-examine them with evidence that the Universe naturally provides us. Here’s a case that is far from being open-and-shut. **About the Speaker** Dr. Basundhara Ghosh is a faculty of Physics at Azim Premji University, Bengaluru, and specialises in Theoretical Cosmology. The stories of India’s states are, in many ways, the story of India itself. States are more than administrative boundaries on a map. They are places where we grow up, build friendships, find work, and make memories. They shape our languages, cultures, identities and our sense of home. Every time a state is created or an existing one is altered, the country and its people are reshaped in the process. In this lecture, we’ll go beyond memorising capitals and marking boundaries on a school atlas. Through stories, historical details and a quiz to get us thinking, we’ll explore the events, ideas and movements that shaped the states we know today. Why was a particular state created? What did its borders look like before? How did language, politics, culture and history influence its formation? And what do these stories tell us about the country we call home? Whether you grew up in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bengal, or somewhere else entirely, there’s a story here that belongs to you. The Universe is expanding, and one quantity, the cosmological constant, has been known to explain why the expansion is speeding up.... until now. New data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) hints that the cosmological constant may not be constant after all. Inspired by the film noir genre, this talk will address what we know about the Universe’s expansion so far, and whether the cosmological constant is dead for good. We will visit the crime scene, flash back through a century of clues, and question the witnesses: galaxies and quasars that each saw the universe at a different moment in time. We will line up the suspects who may or may not have killed the cosmological constant, and cross-examine them with evidence that the Universe naturally provides us. Such forces often appear as difficulties or a sense of being 'stuck' in life, affecting our behavior, relationships, career, health/wellbeing, or even financial circumstances. This method provides a three-dimensional ‘map’ of one’s life as it is at present. It is a simple yet powerful way to explore entanglements and blockages in our personal life and in our family history. The method brings awareness and clarity into personal challenges by focusing the client on the root cause of such difficulties. Constellations provide an opening for a positive life shift and present ways for deep healing processes to occur. **WHAT HAPPENS IN A CONSTELLATION SESSION?** In Constellations work the ‘client’ is referred to as the ‘Issue Holder’. The method uses workshop participants as ‘Representatives’ to stand in for key people in the client’s life such as family members, colleagues, partners, ex-partners etc., sometimes ‘abstract’ concepts such as an emotion, country of origin, religion, or destiny are also represented. All participants are invited to take part as Representatives. It means that some of our behavior patterns can be attributed to traumatic events in your family history. This notion has always been one of the guiding principles of Systemic / Constellations Therapy, a form of work that is dedicated to exposing and dealing with issues emerging from our family system.
