| Swarantar – A Mosaic of Melodies | Wed, Oct 14, 1:30 PM UTC | Bangalore International Centre, 7, 4th Main Road, Domlur II Stage, Bangalore, Karnataka, 560071, India, Bengaluru | 3mxjwoil4c522 | Curator | This concert explores twin ragas that differ by only a single swara, yet inhabit entirely different emotional worlds despite their near-identical scales. Presented side by side, the ragas reveal how one altered note reshapes melodic movement, how characteristic phrases diverge, and how the smallest shift in pitch can change a raga’s entire temperament. Ragas, the concert suggests, are not merely scales but living personalities. The comparative listening invites the audience into the mindset of composer and performer alike, showcasing the subtle moments where two melodic lines converge before parting to chart their own paths: a quiet reminder of the poetry hidden in what might otherwise pass unnoticed. | Drawing the Everyday | Sat, Oct 17, 5:30 AM UTC | Museum of Art & Photography (MAP), Bengaluru | 3mxjwokjrcu22 | Curator | What can a few lines, a handful of words and a simple visual gag reveal about the world around us? For over a decade, Rachita Taneja’s Sanitary Panels has used the apparent simplicity of the stick figure and the immediacy of satire to take on questions of gender, sexuality, caste, discrimination, politics and power. Her comics often begin with something seemingly familiar (a news story, an everyday interaction, a social assumption) and reduce it to its essential contradiction, allowing the absurdity of the system behind it to come into view. In this hands-on workshop, participants will experiment with this process of reduction: taking a complex question around identity or social belonging and translating it into a short comic. Through writing, sequencing, dialogue, visual economy and satire, they will explore how much (and how little) a comic needs to say. | |||

| Zine & Tell - Art Workshop | Sat, Oct 17, 6:30 AM UTC | Atta Galatta, Bengaluru | 3mxjwoybors22 | Curator | Zine & Tell is a fun, hands-on afternoon of making, exploring and getting a little creative. A zine is a small, self-published magazine that can be about absolutely anything — your interests, thoughts, stories, favourite things, random obsessions or little pieces of your world. We’ll take a quick look at where zines came from and how people have used them as a way to express themselves, share ideas and tell stories outside the usual rules of publishing. | Maya Inès Touam - Belongings | Sat, Oct 24, 8:00 AM UTC | Huis Marseille, Keizersgracht 401, Amsterdam, North Holland, NL, Amsterdam, North Holland | 3mxjwp56gk422 | Curator | Huis Marseille will be showing Belongings (Ce qui nous appartient), the first solo exhibition in the Netherlands by the French-Algerian artist Maya Inès Touam. In recent years Touam has created remarkable, visually striking tableaus in which elements from different times, cultures, art movements and religions come together in a finely balanced way. Her compositions address contemporary themes that are close to the artist’s heart, allowing myths and masterpieces to find echoes in the present. Between North and South Maya Inès Touam grew up in Paris, where she graduated from the art academy. At the same time, she felt strongly linked to Algeria, the homeland of her father’s family and the country her maternal grandmother had left in 1953, on the eve of the Algerian War of Independence (1954–1962). In her youth, people often spoke of European and North African cultures in dichotomies: black and white, good and evil, centre and periphery, the coloniser and the colonised. Touam resists such artificial polarities in her artistic practice. With a deep sense of history she interweaves stories, visual languages, and objects from different cultures in her digital collages. Inspiration through forms, stories, myths and masterpieces Maya Inès Touam presents her photographs on supports that carry their own histories: Christian altarpiece panels, Gothic ogival forms, reinterpreted stained glass, Almoravid architecture, Asian folding screens, and everyday objects such as serving trays. Each work is permeated by a network of references and layers of meaning. The same is true of the photographs themselves. Some of the works are reinterpretations of handed-down stories, such as the myth of Icarus or a Senegalese folk tale. In many of the works, colour and composition can be traced back to aspects of Western art history, such as religious iconography, vanitas still lifes, and Fauvist colour experiments. Henri Matisse, in particular, is a clear source of inspiration: Touam makes still lifes based on his approach to composition and abstraction, or cites the compositions of individual works. In musical terms one could speak of an artist ‘sampling’ earlier works in order to create an entirely unique and contemporary sound; at the same time, citing masterpieces is an elegant way for a French-Algerian woman to enter the domain of dominant Western art history. Digital collages Touam uses objects to convey narratives. Each object is not merely a visual element, but also carries the history and culture from which it originates. The artist builds her compositions around this symbolic significance. She experiments with different arrangements, makes minute adjustments, and photographs every step. She then combines the individual studio shots into a single digital still life. Each tableau is thus underpinned by hundreds, and in some cases even thousands, of photographs. The result is a syncretic still life, in which the cultural references coalesce into a coherent whole, while retaining their distinct identities. Well after Touam had developed her own artistic language she discovered the book Tout-Monde (1993) by the poet and philosopher Édouard Glissant, in which he articulates a vision of identity that is no longer rooted in homeland, origin and tradition, but in fragmentation, dispersal and chance. Glissard’s book lent words to what Touam had explored for years through images. In her work, references to the past become a means of imagining a present and a future in which the world is no longer divided into centre and periphery, and where cultural exchange is the norm. With the objects as narrative components, Maya Inès Touam addresses themes close to her heart: migration, motherhood, displacement, and the relationship between people and nature. She also rescues voices from obscurity, such as those of female leaders who were prominent in their day, but who historians have all but ignored. In this way her rich references to myths and masterpieces take on the agility of stories passed down by word of mouth, as their narrator adapts them to the situation and the spirit of the time. By reactivating them, they find an echo in the present. | |||
| Andrzej Steinbach - Hier | Sat, Oct 24, 8:00 AM UTC | – | 3mxjwp5a36g22 | Curator | Huis Marseille will be introducing the Netherlands to the work of Andrzej Steinbach. Early on in his career Steinbach developed his own visual language, with meticulously planned compositions and almost Spartan settings. The exhibition title Hier (Here) can be read as an invitation: his works are gestures of showing. Their austerity helps to isolate patterns, whether these concern small details or larger social structures, and creates space to consider the mechanisms behind the act of looking. Steinbach treats seeing itself as an aesthetic problem. Rather than resolving it, his art gives the problem a form that can be admired, so that it can be attended to elsewhere. Figures Andrzej Steinbach constructs his images like a director: ‘there has to be a scratch on the surface here’ and ‘your hand has to be here’. His models follow his instructions closely, bringing subtle variations in gesture, posture, or outfit. Their invariably neutral expressions offer no insight into their personalities. Steinbach simply calls them ‘figures’. He uses these figures, the backgrounds, and the compositions to form typologically structured series that aesthetically explore the process by which we attribute meaning, roles and types to what we see, even when much information is withheld. Society begins with three The series Gesellschaft beginnt mit drei (2017) examines role assignments amongst people. Three figures perform a choreography of changing poses, formations and clothing, making their group dynamic subject to constant change. Its title refers to the argument that an interplay of forces among three elements underlies most structures, including, ultimately, society itself. In almost every photo in Gesellschaft beginnt mit drei, only three eyes can be seen: one of the faces has been cut in half. Together, the images blend to form a group portrait full of inconsistencies. Mayakovsky’s pose These inconsistencies are intentional; Steinbach often exposes photographic conventions by subtly breaking them. In a key work, he has a builder recreate the pose of the poet Vladimir Mayakovsky in a famous 1924 photograph by Alexander Rodchenko: sideways on a chair, and leaning slightly forward, the figure looks at the camera with an unwavering gaze. A construction helmet replaces Mayakovsky’s fedora, while a vape takes the place of his cigarette. Detached from its context, the pose ceases to function as an expression of individuality and instead emerges as a culturally inherited gesture that can be inhabited by another body. Extending humans In the newest series Erweiterungen (2024), figures pose with practical implements. The title refers to the idea that we make objects as extensions of our own bodies. In Steinbach’s photos a sleeping bag helps with skin temperature regulation, a mirror enlarges the field of view, and a sewage pipe functions as an extension of the intestines. In one photo, no object at all can be seen: however, purposeful hand gestures point to something that remains invisible. Auto Erotik Steinbach’s practice is driven by a sense of fascination with complex ‘problems’ and a love of form. Perhaps as a result, his titles often refer to social theories, while his images contain references to images from the history of photography. His series Auto Erotik (2022), with dynamic close-up photos of screws and tools, puts one in mind of the ‘machine aesthetic’ that was popularised by the Neues Sehen in the 1920s, a movement that was particularly prominent among Bauhaus artists. However, whereas at that time photography celebrated the machine as a symbol of progress, Steinbach shows little of this enthusiasm. The tools show clear signs of wear and tear: dents and scratches attest to their intensive use, and Steinbach sometimes deprives a tool of its function by drilling a hole through it. Arranged together, they hold one another in a tension-filled equilibrium. In this series the artist examines how macrophotography can evoke the illusion of eroticism. | |||
| Martine Gutierrez - Wunderkind | Fri, Oct 9, 8:00 AM UTC | Huis Marseille, Keizersgracht 401, Amsterdam, North Holland, NL, Amsterdam, North Holland | 3mxjwp5bl4i22 | Curator | Is an artist born or made? Is a person’s identity set from birth, or discovered later? Martine Gutierrez addresses these questions in a large-scale solo exhibition, Wunderkind, emphasising the importance of creativity and expression – qualities that characterised her childhood and made her the internationally celebrated artist she has since become. Identity is a performance An interdisciplinary artist, Martine Gutierrez works with photography, video, music and performance. Through self-portraiture and cinematic tableaus she reimagines identity, not only as material but also as method. At the 58th Venice Biennale she captured the global art world’s attention with a series of shape-shifting self-portraits in which her body serves as the focus of transformation and critique. ‘Identity is a performance,’ she says. ‘With a bit of practice you can be almost anything.’ Childhood as the ‘threshold of selfhood’ Martine sees childhood as the ‘threshold of selfhood’ and art was always her medium, in a deliberate, continuous practice of personal reinvention. The exhibition Wunderkind pieces together the riddle that is Martine, using never before seen artworks that date back to her childhood. Martine Gutierrez was born in 1989, the child of an American mother and a Guatemalan father. From an early age she played with the expectations attached to names and appearances, adding an ‘e’ to her name Martín in order to avoid being gender-stereotyped. In her earliest experiments Martine was already using art to address the central challenge of childhood: to determine who you are and how you want to be seen. Her current, layered identity as a transgender woman of mixed extraction and her ‘stand-ins’ in self-portraits are an extension of these childhood creations, in which reality and myth remain fluid and convertible. Wunderkind invites the viewer into Martine’s world – building a portrait of a life in perpetual performance, and revealing the foundations of an artistic practice rooted in the continuous construction and deconstruction of the self. | |||

The month of October is a time to connect with our ancestry ~ the gifts, beauty, and histories that have been passed down through our lineages. Each of our ancestral lineages carries a complicated history. Some of it is beautiful, some incredibly painful. Yet what each lineage shares is that somewhere down the line, all of our ancestors were intimately connected with the land. In this ritual workshop, we will explore this connection through land-based practices, using it as a root point for cultivating a deeper sense of belonging. Belonging to the earth, belonging to our lineages, belonging to humankind, belonging to life. Together, we will honor the ancestors ~ our own lineages, those of each other, and the original stewards of these lands. We will also explore a little of the Celtic traditions of Samhain, weaving ancestral remembrance with our connection to the living earth. The morning land connection session that will be led by Saoirse Watters, you can find more about her here: https://saoirsewatters.com/
| Self-Care Serenade | Sat, Oct 17, 11:30 PM UTC | The New Local, Boulder, CO | 3mxjwpapdcf22 | Curator | Gather your favorite self-care supplies for this cozy collective experience of self-care while being serenaded by live harp! What is a self-care serenade? Imagine a cozy, intimate, artsy space filled with live, improvised, meditative music. Your favorite books and self-care supplies are spread around you. You've brought a fluffy pillow and blanket and are finally taking the time to prioritize yourself how we so often are pressured away from doing. There's a cozy group spread around the room also quietly napping, doing yoga, reading, making art, meditating, and journaling. You've started the evening with a moment to share with each other as much and as little as you each wanted to mention about life, and you're feeling seen. You're not alone in the pressures and injustices of the world, and this room is full of people committed to protecting your right to rest. And you're so grateful they've made this time for themselves too. Now soft, live music is playing and this time is yours. The whole priority of this event is to have a supported chance to custom-craft a self-care practice that's exactly what your body needs, and exactly what your heart needs too. An hour is set aside ahead of you for being serenaded by improvised harp music without commitments or distractions, with full permission to make this time whatever you need. The music and community and soft lighting all saying "We celebrate you choosing to care for yourself!" Come alone or bring your crew, grab a drink, work on an art project, play a game, read a book or zine, listen to music, or just talk to people you don’t already know. Join us for a few hours to be present, make things, and just be together. Bring a snack to share if you feel inspired! | |||

Cut things up, layer them, glue them down, make something strange, political, beautiful, ugly. Bring your own materials or dig through what we’ve got (hello vintage Nat Geos!), and spend time making things alongside other people without worrying about whether the result is “good.” No art experience required. Just scissors, glue, questionable ideas, and a willingness to make a mess.

| A Sound Healing Journey into the Womb of the Earth for Ecological Self-Restoration | Mon, Oct 19, 2:00 PM UTC | Eben G Fine Park, Boulder, CO | 3mxjwpb4sra22 | Curator | Facilitated by Ayleen Guzman of Mamafaeria Healing Arts At the center of this offering is the understanding that the Earth is not simply the place where we live, but a living spiritual presence that can become a gateway into connection with the Divine, the Divine Mother, God, our ancestors, and ourselves. The womb of the Earth can become a place of return, remembrance, healing, and transformation. We are living through profound and rapidly changing times. Across many Indigenous, African, Native, and spiritual traditions, there are teachings about periods of great transformation in which humanity is called to remember its relationship with the Earth and return to right relationship with one another. Within my own spiritual framework, this is a time when the Earth is calling us to become more sensitive to her presence, her needs, and the wisdom she carries. The intention of this ceremony is to begin cultivating that relationship consciously. | |||

Join us for our inaugural Artists Community Social. Artists always have a higher rate of success working together. The era of silos is coming to an end and it begins with connecting in person. This event is an opportunity to meet other working artists in the community and seriously discuss the realities of what it’s like to be an artist in the world today. It features community mingling, group discussions, breakout sessions and breakout group report outs. It’s open to artists of every level from hobbyist to professional. A thriving creative community has space and opportunity for everyone. Hosted by Distributed Creatives, a non-profit that builds local-first systems that scale worldwide, using open source software to move power and opportunity to creators and reduce dependence on centralized platforms. Our initial launch will be in Boulder and we’re hosting community events to bring the greater community of artists to the table as some of the key stakeholders for this project's success. We're building infrastructure that empowers creatives to have a path for a sustainable career without extractive intermediaries. We believe a critical piece of that is creating empowered creative communities from the local up. Our team has deep roots in Boulder. Matty Bovard, the co-founder, has been organizing art community and working as a poet here for 17 years. For more info check out our website here www.distributedcreatives.org

What’s often missing from that conversation, however, are rigorous, comprehensive, academically supported Native-led studies proving that— even through the lens of modern law— large areas of what we call the United States remain illegally occupied. And nowhere is the evidence and culpability more dramatic than in the state of Colorado. PEOPLE of the SACRED LAND (2026, 32 min) follows Richard Willams (Oglala Lakota, Northern Cheyenne) as he recounts the findings of the Truth, Restoration, and Education Commission (TREC) of Colorado’s TREC Reports. While Rick’s story focuses on Colorado, the approach, implications, and impact of his work provide a model for Native leaders across the continent. - **Details:** - Film will begin at 6 PM - RSVP for [_People of the Sacred Land_](https://cohereboulder.org/events/did%3Aplc%3Aw54s52ycbw5lreyhlzexredb/ev-mu0a09pvczsjm1) **When:** Monday, October 19th 5:30 - 7:30 PM **Where:** Naropa Cultural Center

And how do we navigate the space between the two?Together, we will explore how to make sense of transitions in midlife, distinguish between changes we can influence and those we need to respond to, and find greater clarity about what we want to carry forward and what we might want to leave behind.Join us for a thoughtful, open conversation about understanding your own transitions and finding your way forward. | |||

We’ll take a quick look at where zines came from and how people have used them as a way to express themselves, share ideas and tell stories outside the usual rules of publishing. Then, you’ll get to create your very own zine, bringing together all the things that make you — through writing, doodling, cutting, pasting, illustrating and a little bit of everything in between. There’s no right way to make a zine and definitely no artistic skills required. Just come with an open mind, explore your creativity, meet some new people and maybe leave with a few new friends (and your very own little magazine!)

All skill levels welcome. The foundation of a flexible, good IndieWeb website is markup (the "M" in HTML!") that doesn't drive you batty to debug and CSS that works with it to have it look, sound, and interact how you want, whatever device or format the website is displayed on. Front End Study Hall is an HTML + CSS focused group meeting to learn from each other about how to make code do what we want. Sometimes we try to build something we can use and reuse, mob programming-style. Even if we don't know, or don't have a quick fix or plan for what you're trying to do with your markup and stylesheets, we can probably point you toward resources that can help. | Earth as Ancestor | Wed, Oct 21, 3:00 PM UTC | Eben G Fine Park (West End), Boulder, CO | 3mxjwpao7vw22 | Curator | Cultivating Belonging Through Connection with the Land and Our Ancestry October 31st–November 1st marks Samhain, a Celtic holiday honoring the ancestors.

| COHere Hub-- Artists Community Social presented by Distributed Creatives | Fri, Oct 23, 12:30 AM UTC | The Coffee Stand, Boulder, CO | 3mxjwpbboxq22 | Curator | As an artist working in the modern world do you feel like you're swimming in the open ocean, no life jacket and shark infested waters? For more info check out our website here www.distributedcreatives.org | |||

| People of the Sacred Land: Film Screening + Dialogue (COhere Boulder) | Mon, Oct 19, 11:30 PM UTC | Boulder, Colorado, 80302, Boulder, Colorado, 80302, CO | 3mxjwpbx4za22 | Curator | **What:** The idea that we are living on stolen land isn’t new, or even novel; it’s a reality that exists across settler communities worldwide, and many people in the United States are aware of the blatant agendas, coercion, and profound immorality of the treaty process. - **Details:** - Film will begin at 6 PM - RSVP for [_People of the Sacred Land_](https://cohereboulder.org/events/did%3Aplc%3Aw54s52ycbw5lreyhlzexredb/ev-mu0a09pvczsjm1) **When:** Monday, October 19th 5:30 - 7:30 PM **Where:** Naropa Cultural Center | |||
