Vultures have huge cultural value, provide crucial ecosystem services, and even have major human health importance across India! That’s quite apart from their amazing attributes, including exceptional eyesight, soaring abilities and disease resistance. And yet since the 1990s, India has lost a staggering 99.9% of its main vulture species in just ten years, and four species are now on the verge of extinction. It took some serious detective work to understand why! Learn how an apparently harmless painkiller drug used for cattle caused havoc for all nine vulture species found in India, and how combined efforts of the scientific community, NGOs and especially the Indian Government have been tackling the challenge of saving Asia’s vultures from extinction. It’s an extraordinary story, which isn’t over yet. Chris has been working to coordinate conservation efforts for these often-misunderstood birds for well over 20 years, and for other endangered species for his entire career. Come and learn about their importance, and perhaps through understanding this better there may be ways you can help turn their fortunes around? **About the Speaker** Chris is Globally Threatened Species Officer for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and since 2004 has coordinated Asian Vulture work. He is Advisor to SAVE (Saving Asia’s Vultures from Extinction), a consortium of 32 organisations committed to conserving vultures. Chris is also Co-Chair of the IUCN Vulture Specialist Group (VSG) since 2011. He has been based in Bangalore, India with his family since 2013. He has also worked on Northern Bald Ibis and other Globally threated species. Chris was awarded an MBE by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in 2022 for services to vulture conservation and the environment. **Event Details** 📅 Saturday, 10 October 🕓 2 PM – 4 PM 📍 The Bangalore Local, Koramangala This is a sober venue. **Your ticket includes:** • 1 complimentary kombucha from Local Ferment Co. • First-come, first-served seating **About Pint of View** Pint of View is India's Largest Lecture Community.
