"description": "A conversation with Matt Duss, Tobita Chow & Jake Werner, contributors to the new book “A World For All: New Visions of U.S. Foreign Policy”\n\nPlease join New Lines Magazine and Nighthawk for a conversation with progressive foreign policy thinkers Matt Duss, Tobita Chow and Jake Werner, moderated by New Lines Politics Editor Danny Postel.\n\nAbout the book\n\nU.S. foreign policy is a mess: The establishment remains committed to global military primacy at almost any cost, fueling an endless struggle for dominance abroad while draining resources and eroding democratic liberties at home.\n\n“A World for All” advances a new vision, one skeptical of runaway defense spending where private contractors siphon off more than half of the $1 trillion military budget, and of fossil fuel and pharmaceutical companies shaping policy to their own advantage. Elon Musk spent $270 million electing Donald Trump, then dismantled U.S. foreign assistance, a reckless act that is costing hundreds of thousands of lives. How much of foreign policy is distorted by moneyed interests like these? This book makes the case for tackling inequality through a pro-worker international agenda.\n\nThe authors lay out a practical framework for foreign policy change: revisiting the president’s sole authority to launch a nuclear strike; restoring the Office of Technology Assessment (which operated from 1977 to 1995) to regulate AI; and rethinking policy toward China, Latin America, the Middle East, climate, foreign aid, migration and Africa.\n\nAbout the panelists\n\nMatt Duss is executive vice president of the Center for International Policy in Washington. Previously he was a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and, from 2017 to 2022, foreign policy adviser to Sen. Bernie Sanders and foreign policy director for the Sanders 2020 presidential campaign. Earlier, he was president of the Foundation for Middle East Peace.\n\nTobita Chow researches progressive strategy, U.S.-China conflict and global climate politics. He has published articles on these topics in a range of publications including The Guardian, In These Times and The Nation. He was the founding director of Justice is Global and has a background in community organizing and progressive electoral campaigns.\n\nJake Werner is director of the East Asia Program at the Quincy Institute. His research examines U.S.–China relations and global capitalism. Jake is also a cofounder of Justice is Global, a grassroots organizing project that advocates reforms to the global economy. He received his doctorate in history from the University of Chicago.\n\nThis event is part of the monthly series Juxtapositions: Conversations on Art, Ideas and Global Cross-Currents, a co-production of New Lines Magazine and Nighthawk. It is free of charge and open to the public.\n\nCopies of “A World For All: New Visions of U.S. Foreign Policy” will be available for sale at the event",
