"description": "This month we will focus on Role Play, which is a practice to give you a difference embodied experience of NVC inspired dialogue.\n\nFears for upcoming difficult situations are based on past experiences of similar kinds of conversations. These memories sit in the nervous system as sensations, images, fragments – and they are still open (not integrated) and alive because the _amigdala_ (the danger alert part of our brain) does not timecode these experiences, it records the threat as real and current, in order that we are awake to danger.\n\nHere’s the opening: since these memories are not fully integrated, they’re open to being changed if we give ourselves a different experience. So for example, if we respond with:\n\n• Warmth instead of coldness\n\n• Gentleness instead of urgency\n\n• Understanding instead of isolation\n\nand by naming emotions with warmth and curiosity, without trying to fix or change us, it reaches the amygdala. The nervous system goes, “Oh… someone is here with me now. I’m not alone.” And new neural connections form, gently layering in safety where there was once fear. This is how we resource ourselves with roleplay.\n\n**Specific instructions for the session**\n\nTo practice roleplay in a short space of time, it's really helpful to get clear on **what you actually want to say** - _Observation, Feeling, Need, Request. _ \n\nFor example,\n\n**For a situation where you are struggling with Unclear Instructions, your Observation, Feeling, Need, Request, could be**\n\n**Observation:** \n“Sometimes I’m given tasks without clear instructions.”\n\n**Feeling:** \n“I feel confused.”\n\n**Need:** \n“I need clarity so I can do the work properly.”\n\n**Request:** \n“Can you please explain or show me exactly how you want the task done?”\n\nYou will say the thing you want to say and the roleplay begins there.\n\nThere are more examples of Observation, Feeling, Need, Request [here](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1YVWuUlvWYTcjTlxB86umMK05BEYvhbas/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=108741657534958538311&rtpof=true&sd=true).\n\nIf you don't want to bring a situation of your own, you can use one of the examples and roleplay that.\n\nBefore you come, you can review your input from your Foundation training and read or listen to this [short post about the purpose and practice of roleplay](https://ceridwen.substack.com/p/roleplay)\n\n \n\n**About Keep your NVC fit**\n\nKeep your NVC fit is a monthly series to practice 3 core NVC practices\n\n- 4 steps of Self-Empathy. We use the 4 steps of empathy practice, which you can recap [here](https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1BoOn_z56GdjzUShE0mr9j4iInFWrQyCf8F6gdenb3-s/edit#slide=id.g2c1c02c9815_0_0).\n- Empathic Listening. This is the skill of holding space for someone when they are trying to process and understand something that has happened. It’s the skill of reflecting back and guessing feelings and needs in supportive ways. It’s also a helpful skill for meetings that are getting derailed or stuck. Before you come, you can watch this short video about [Reflecting back with Effectiveness and Ease](https://youtu.be/Ta5e2PtQREk?feature=shared)\n- Role Plays of Difficult Conversations\n\nHere is a [short about Keep Your NVC Fit](https://youtu.be/d2KTaX7GiZM?feature=shared)\n\n \n\n**Practical and Logistics**\n\nThis is a low-cost drop in, you can come once or every month.\n\nThere is a no cost option, please only use that if it would prevent you from coming. \n\nThis is open to people who have done a Foundation training or Intro to NVC. This is not a complete beginners class, although relative beginners (post foundation) are welcome.\n\n \n\n**Disclaimer / Self Check**\n\nNonviolent Communication is not therapy and is not a substitute for therapy. This practice session may not be for you:\n\n- If you have a sense that what you want to explore might be challenging for others,\n- if it would be triggering to listen to others speaking about difficult events,\n- if other people’s beginner-intermediate level learning of NVC might land awkwardly for you.\n\nIf you have any questions, please ask.",
