"description": "# **LEAN\\_IN ADVANCED RESIDENCY**\n\n### **Three pathways. One artistic journey.**\n\n**Partnering → Composition & Creative Research → Performance & Jam Integration**\n\n**Advanced Movement & Creative Practice in Arambol, Goa**\n\nA three-module residency for experienced contemporary dancers and Contact Improvisers who want to deepen their movement practice, explore creative research and develop their relationship to performance.\n\nThe Advanced Residency is a space to move beyond simply learning more material. Instead, we use movement as a way of asking questions, developing ideas and discovering new possibilities through the body.\n\nAcross three connected modules, we move from **partnering and physical relationship** , into **composition and creative research** , and finally towards **performance, improvisation and jam integration**.\n\nYou’re welcome to join one module, choose two, or follow the full three-module journey.\n\nEach module can stand alone, but together they create a progressive pathway from:\n\n**Moving with others → Creating with others → Performing and improvising together**\n\n* * *\n\n# **✨ WHAT THE ADVANCED RESIDENCY OFFERS**\n\nThe Advanced Residency balances focused training with space for experimentation, research and creative development.\n\nRather than focusing purely on technique, we explore how movement can become a tool for **artistic enquiry, collaboration and expression**.\n\nWe’ll explore:\n\n- Advanced partnering and Contact Improvisation\n- Shared weight, counterbalance and momentum\n- Dynamic lifting and flying\n- Active Basing — travelling with and responding to the flight\n- Improvisation as creative research\n- Contemporary composition tools\n- Solo, duet and ensemble creation\n- Task-based and collaborative devising\n- Artistic decision-making\n- Performance as a shared experience\n- Jam awareness and compositional thinking\n- Ensemble awareness and group dynamics\n- Developing confidence in open creative environments\n- Finding and developing an authentic creative voice\n\nThe residency is not about arriving with a finished idea.\n\nIt’s about creating the conditions for ideas to **emerge, develop and change through movement.**\n\n* * *\n\n# **🙋‍♀️ WHO IS THE ADVANCED RESIDENCY FOR?**\n\nThe Advanced Residency is designed for **experienced movers** with at least one year of training in contemporary dance and/or Contact Improvisation.\n\nYou should feel comfortable working within an embodied movement environment and be ready to engage with partnering, improvisation, creative research and collaborative practice.\n\nThis residency is for people who want to go deeper than simply learning choreography or collecting new movement material.\n\nYou might be looking to:\n\n- Deepen your partnering practice\n- Develop greater confidence with weight sharing and flying\n- Expand your improvisational vocabulary\n- Explore composition and choreographic thinking\n- Develop material with other artists\n- Become more comfortable making artistic decisions\n- Investigate your own creative voice\n- Explore performance without relying on predetermined choreography\n- Integrate your practice into jam environments\n- Spend dedicated time researching and creating with other experienced movers\n\nYou don’t need to arrive with a specific project or finished idea.\n\n**Curiosity is enough to begin.**\n\n* * *\n\n# **⭐ MODULE 1 — PARTNERING PATTERNS**\n\n### **Contemporary Partnering, Contact Improvisation & Active Basing**\n\nThe first module begins with our relationship to another body.\n\nThrough contemporary partnering and Contact Improvisation, we’ll investigate shared weight, momentum, counterbalance and the subtle communication that allows movement to become responsive and collaborative.\n\nAlongside dynamic lifting and flying, we’ll explore **Active Basing** — an approach developed through Josh’s movement research which invites the base to remain mobile, responsive and engaged throughout the flight.\n\nRather than simply supporting another person, the base becomes an active participant in the movement.\n\nBoth people travel.\n\nBoth people listen.\n\nBoth people shape what happens next.\n\n### **We’ll explore:**\n\n**Contemporary partnering principles** \nShared weight, counterbalance, momentum and physical communication.\n\n**Dynamic lifting & flying** \nDeveloping pathways into, through and out of flight.\n\n**Active Basing** \nExploring how the base can travel, respond and contribute to the movement.\n\n**Timing & responsiveness** \nLearning to read momentum and make decisions together.\n\n**Trust & communication** \nDeveloping clarity, sensitivity and shared responsibility.\n\n**Partnering as collaboration** \nMoving beyond supporting and being supported towards creating movement together.\n\nThis module is ideal for movers wanting to deepen their physical relationship with others while developing greater confidence, sensitivity and choice within partnering.\n\n* * *\n\n# **⭐ MODULE 2 — COMPOSITION & CREATIVE RESEARCH**\n\n### **Improvisation, Devising & Developing an Artistic Voice**\n\nThe second module takes the physical exploration of partnering and begins to ask a different question:\n\n**What can movement create?**\n\nRather than beginning with choreography, we begin with curiosity.\n\nThrough improvisation, composition and collaborative enquiry, we’ll investigate how movement can generate ideas, communicate meaning and become a vehicle for artistic expression.\n\nDrawing from Lean\\_in’s ongoing choreographic research, we’ll explore movement through observation, sensation, relational psychology and embodied enquiry.\n\nThe aim isn’t to find the “right” answer.\n\nIt’s to develop the ability to **notice, question, choose and create.**\n\n### **We’ll explore:**\n\n**Improvisation as creative research** \nUsing movement to discover rather than simply execute.\n\n**Composition tools** \nWorking with space, time, relationship, repetition, contrast and attention.\n\n**Solo, duet & ensemble creation** \nDeveloping material individually and collaboratively.\n\n**Task-based exploration** \nUsing simple structures to generate unexpected movement.\n\n**Collaborative devising** \nLearning how to create material with others without needing one person to hold all the answers.\n\n**Artistic decision-making** \nDeveloping clarity around why you choose what you choose.\n\n**Developing a creative voice** \nBeginning to recognise the qualities, questions and interests that make your movement yours.\n\nThis module is for artists wanting to move from **doing movement → to thinking through movement.**\n\n* * *\n\n# **⭐ MODULE 3 — PERFORMANCE & JAM INTEGRATION**\n\n### **Performance, Improvisation & Open Creative Practice**\n\nThe final module brings the different strands of the residency together.\n\nPartnering, composition and creative research move into performance and open improvisation.\n\nWe’ll explore what happens when there is no fixed choreography to rely on and decisions have to be made in real time.\n\nRather than thinking about performance as simply presenting something to an audience, we’ll investigate performance as a **shared experience**.\n\nHow do we remain present?\n\nHow do we make clear choices?\n\nHow do we respond to the people around us?\n\nHow can improvisation become composition?\n\nAnd how can the jam become a space for artistic practice rather than simply a place to move?\n\n### **We’ll explore:**\n\n**Performance as shared experience** \nDeveloping presence and awareness within performance.\n\n**Improvisation in performance** \nMaking creative decisions while remaining open to what is happening.\n\n**Jam awareness** \nUnderstanding space, attention, timing and the wider movement environment.\n\n**Compositional thinking** \nRecognising and shaping relationships as they emerge.\n\n**Ensemble awareness** \nWorking with groups, shifting focus and responding to collective dynamics.\n\n**Confidence in open creative environments** \nBecoming more comfortable with uncertainty and the unknown.\n\n**Authentic artistic expression** \nFinding ways to perform and improvise without losing your own voice.\n\nThe aim isn’t to become better at “performing improvisation.”\n\nIt’s to become more comfortable **creating in the moment.**\n\n* * *\n\n# **🌱 THE JOURNEY**\n\n### **From partnering → to creating → to performing**\n\nThe three modules are connected by a simple progression.\n\n### **01 — PARTNERING**\n\nWe develop our ability to listen and respond through another body.\n\n### **02 — COMPOSITION**\n\nWe begin using those physical and relational tools to generate ideas.\n\n### **03 — PERFORMANCE**\n\nWe bring those ideas into open, shared and unpredictable environments.\n\nThe journey is not completely linear.\n\nIdeas from one module will continue to appear in the next, allowing material, questions and relationships to develop over time.\n\n* * *\n\n# **🕘 THE DAILY RHYTHM**\n\nThe Advanced Residency follows a spacious rhythm that balances focused training, independent artistic research and community practice.\n\nThe intention is to create enough structure for depth, while leaving enough space for participants to follow their own creative questions.\n\n### **9:45am**\n\n**Arrival & Attunement**\n\nWe begin each day in the studio, arriving in the body and the shared space before moving into the day’s practice.\n\n### **Morning**\n\n**Studio Practice**\n\nThe morning is dedicated to focused training and creative enquiry, exploring partnering, composition, improvisation and performance research.\n\n### **Chai Break**\n\nA shared pause in the morning to step out of the practice, connect and reset before continuing.\n\n### **Midday**\n\n**Movement Lab**\n\nWe continue developing the day’s physical and creative material, allowing ideas to move between structured exercises and open exploration.\n\n### **Lunch**\n\nA longer break to eat, rest and recharge.\n\n### **Afternoon**\n\n**Independent Research & Development**\n\nAfter lunch, the studio remains available for independent research, collaboration and creative development.\n\nThis is an important part of the residency.\n\nYou might use this time to develop material, work with another participant, explore a question that has emerged during class, or simply spend time allowing an idea to unfold.\n\n### **3:20–4:20pm**\n\n**Optional Research Lab**\n\nAn optional facilitated session for participants who want additional support with their research.\n\nThis is a space to bring questions, test ideas, share developing material and receive feedback or guidance.\n\n### **4:20–6:30pm**\n\n**Afternoon Integration**\n\nWe return to shared practice, bringing the discoveries from the day’s research back into the group.\n\nDepending on the module, this may involve composition, partnering, improvisation, performance research or ensemble work.\n\n### **6:30pm**\n\n**Finish**\n\nThe formal studio day ends, leaving the evening open for rest, food, conversation and connection with the wider Arambol community.\n\n* * *\n\n## **A Spacious Weekly Rhythm**\n\nThe residency isn’t structured as seven consecutive days of intensive training.\n\nInstead, we work with a rhythm of:\n\n**2 days on → 1 half day → 2 days on → 2 days off**\n\nThe spaces between the intensive training days are intentional.\n\nThey provide time to rest, reflect, explore independently and allow the material from the studio to settle into the body.\n\nWe believe that **the moments between sessions are just as important as the sessions themselves.**\n\n* * *\n\n# **🌴 THE WIDER COMMUNITY**\n\nThe residency doesn’t stop when the studio session ends.\n\nAlongside the structured programme, participants are invited into Arambol’s wider movement community.\n\nTwo evenings each week include **Focused Jams at Moving Parts Studio** , alongside **Community Jams at Jungle Dance**.\n\nThese gatherings create opportunities to take the ideas developed during the residency into a more open environment.\n\nTo practise.\n\nTo experiment.\n\nTo watch.\n\nTo connect.\n\nAnd to discover what happens when structured learning becomes shared improvisation.\n\n* * *\n\n# **🌿 OUR CREATIVE HOME**\n\n## **Jungle Dance / Moving Parts Studio**\n\n**Jungle Road, Arambol, North Goa**\n\nThe Advanced Residency takes place at Moving Parts Studio, a beautiful bamboo movement space nestled amongst the jungle of Arambol.\n\nThe studio provides a dedicated environment for deep physical practice, creative research and collaboration.\n\nOutside the studio, Arambol becomes part of the residency too.\n\nThe sea, jungle, cafés, local movement community and the many artists who pass through Goa all create a wider environment for exchange and inspiration.\n\nThere is space here to work intensely.\n\nAnd there is space to step away.\n\nWe believe both are important.\n\n### **🌳 The Jungle**\n\nA place to wander, reflect and reconnect, allowing nature to become part of the creative process.\n\n### **🩰 Moving Parts Studio**\n\nA dedicated bamboo movement space with a soft, absorbent floor for physical practice, partnering and research.\n\n### **🌊 The Arabian Sea**\n\nA place to rest, integrate, swim, talk and let the day’s ideas settle.\n\n* * *\n\n# **👥 MEET THE FACULTY**\n\nThe Advanced Residency brings together an international faculty working across contemporary dance, Contact Improvisation, partnering, Butoh and composition.\n\nRather than teaching one fixed methodology, the residency creates a dialogue between different practices and perspectives.\n\n* * *\n\n## **Ivan**\n\n### **Partnering • Contact Improvisation • Butoh**\n\nIvan is a movement artist whose practice brings together partnering, Contact Improvisation and Butoh.\n\nHis teaching invites dancers into a deeper exploration of presence, listening and embodied expression, where technical practice becomes a pathway towards creativity, sensitivity and human connection.\n\n* * *\n\n## **Josh Jones**\n\n### **Contemporary Dance • Contact Improvisation • Partnering**\n\nJosh Jones is a contemporary dancer, facilitator and choreographer exploring movement, connection and creativity.\n\nDrawing from floorwork, Contact Improvisation and embodied practice, he creates spaces that support learning, community and artistic development through movement.\n\nHis ongoing research into partnering and Active Basing forms part of the physical enquiry within the residency.\n\n* * *\n\n## **Indian Guest Faculty**\n\n### **Composition • Contemporary Dance • Choreographic Research**\n\nEach residency welcomes a leading Indian movement artist to join the international faculty.\n\nTheir contribution brings contemporary perspectives from India’s evolving dance landscape and creates opportunities for cultural exchange, new choreographic voices and different approaches to creative practice.\n\n* * *\n\n# **🧰 WHAT TO BRING**\n\nCome prepared for movement, research and
