"description": "_ **Surento** -_ Traditional Karelian Lamenting Concert\n\nSupport band, Oxford based _ **Songhold** _\n\n \n\nWe welcome Surento, a unique ensemble of three professional lamenter-singers to Oxford, all the way from Finland. \n\n![](https://r2.dandelion.events/2026/10/06/05/53/10/34cc98e2-a6a1-4be7-a446-25ad08264b1d/Surento_ L.Matveinen, E.Kallonen, E. Kuitinen_photo by_S.Laaninen.jpg)\n\nLiisa Matveinen, Emmi Kuittinen ja Emilia Kallonen specialize in the Baltic-Finno (such as Karelian and Ingrian) traditions in singing and lamenting.\n\nThe name _Surento_ refers to the presence and inner mood of a grieving person. The word comes from the special poetic language used in Karelian and Ingrian laments. Laments are part of a diverse tradition that is known around the world. They generally express grief and weep connected with death and other separation rituals of the family and village communities. Laments are part of the communal grieving at funerals, weddings or when leaving for the army or war. They also ease everyday sorrows and worries but they can also express gratitude and hope.\n\nKarelian and Ingrian laments are poetic - sung messages to the unseen other world. Using the traditional poetic words and expressions, lamenting is an ancient way to connect with and care for relatives in the secret, unseen afterlife. The lamenting expressions include metaphorical, gentle and respectful words, as well as a melancholic melody and style of performance that evokes empathy and sympathy. In Baltic-Finno areas, laments have been known among the Orthodox population. Over the centuries, while not an Christian ecclesiastical tradition, the laments have reflected an entire worldview and served as a form of communal practice of rituals and demotic prayer. As the 21st century has unfolded, the tradition of lamenting in Finland has taken on new forms and interpretations in response to the changing cultural and social landscape.\n\n_Surento_ bring the ancient ancient traditions of the \"crying verses\" - laments or keening songs, to today's audiences. With fearlessness and skill they have created the new, with respect and knowing of the old. Tradition continues when we let it live, and this happens in a particularly beautiful way in Surento's traditional Baltic-Finno singing and lamenting, combing these in their own compositions and improvisations. Along with polyphonic singing they also play kantele and ukulele. The music includes not only traditional laments but also contemporary lamenting songs and runosongs following the traditional lyrics composed by Surento. Lamentations are performed in Karelian and Ingrian (Izhorian) languages, as well as the personal contemporary lamenting languages and styles of the trio.\n\n![](https://r2.dandelion.events/2026/10/06/06/09/57/08461694-981f-42cd-97c6-1fa8b81901d7/Surento_Emilia Kallonen, Emmi Kuittinen, Liisa Matveinen. Tampereella 17.5.2026.photo by_Santasalo (1).jpg)\n\nThe message of _Surento`s_ music is, however, hopeful and life-affirming. In the songs and laments there is also room for the joy and beauty of existence and sharing. By confronting pain, giving it words and voice in a lament, the lamenter leads her listeners to relief.\n\n**Short Lament video**\n\nLyrics: \n\" Let me begin with my weeping voice and words, let me getly bath you dear listeners with my soft tears. Let me lament for You on this autumn evening full of golden leaves.\"\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/shorts/P0jcVqjBgIc\n\n \n\n_ **Songhold** _\n\nSonghold is a collection of simple chants and songs with words in English that honour the Divine Feminine, particularly the quality of 'holding'. Each song is a medicine of its own, with repeated words acting as a mantra. In a live setting, the audience is invited to join in, resulting in a warm community experience.\n\nThe songs were created by Jackie Singer, Oxford based shamanic artist who uses her voice as a tool for healing both in one-to-one sessions and in chanting groups. She is joined by Josie Webber (cello / bass) and Melissa Holding (piano accordion / Japanese koto). \n\n![](https://r2.dandelion.events/2026/10/06/06/20/21/a00a6a19-6658-4d4f-82d3-c059d79e301d/garden8.jpg)\n\n\"The medicine I needed tonight\" Sarah Dixon\n\n“Soothing and affirming, vitally strong, forward looking and timeless” Permaculture Magazine\n\n“Like having a Reiki treatment from any number of beings on tap at the press of a button.” Miriam\n\n<oembed url=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6AxNshy-Sk\"></oembed>\n\n**Location:**\n\nFriends Meeting House, St Giles, Oxford, OX1 3LW\n\n[**https://www.google.com/maps/place/51%C2%B045'27.3%22N+1%C2%B015'37.7%22W/@51.757572,-1.260482,16z/data=!4m4!3m3!8m2!3d51.7575721!4d-1.2604821?hl=en-US&entry=ttu&g\\_ep=EgoyMDI2MDkzMC4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D**](https://www.google.com/maps/place/51%C2%B045'27.3%22N+1%C2%B015'37.7%22W/@51.757572,-1.260482,16z/data=!4m4!3m3!8m2!3d51.7575721!4d-1.2604821?hl=en-US&entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI2MDkzMC4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D)\n\n \n\n**Parking:**\n\nParking meters are expensive in central Oxford /St Giles \n\nThere is also a North Oxford Park & Ride from Pear Tree roundabout - Get off at the stop nearest St Giles\n\nMulti-story parking at the Westgate Center is 20 mins walk\n\nUnderground parking at Gloucester Green is 10 mins walk\n\n \n\nSurento will make a short tour of Uk, supported by _Songhold_ in Oxford. Their debut album, _Sulatoin,_ was released in April 2026. It is available on international streaming services and on CD-format sold in the concerts. The name _Sulatoin, “featherless“_, comes from the special karelian lamenting language and refers to a grieving person. One word reveals how grief lays a person bare, like a bird without feathers. You can read the Sulatoin album review in Finish Music Quarterly by Tove Djupsjöbacka (May 2026):\n\n[https://www.fmq.fi/articles/bending-old-traditions-into-new-paths](https://www.fmq.fi/articles/bending-old-traditions-into-new-paths) \n \n\nAbout _ **Songhold:** _\n\n[https://www.jackiesinger.co.uk/](https://www.jackiesinger.co.uk/)\n\nAnd [https://jackiesinger.substack.com/](https://jackiesinger.substack.com/) Jackie is writing an article a month, introducing an online meditation for each of the ten tracks on the Songhold album.
