About the facilitators\n\n**1.What is a crankie?**\n\nA crankie theatre is a storytelling machine - an artistic, narrative form of moving image.\n\nThe crankie box, open at the front like a picture frame, contains a long illustrated scroll turned by a handle. As the images on the scroll appear and disappear, the story is told. \n\nCrankies can offer us a connection with the past that brings sweet surprise and delight in the present. The first crankies were made in the Victorian era and were known as Moving Panoramas. Today, crankies are part of a revival of folk and story-related crafts, and are used by storytellers, artists and musicians to engage audiences of all ages. \n\nAs stories told with crankies offer both an aural and visual experience, they can act as a portal into the story world, and bring a special layer of magic to the telling of a tale. The rhythmic motion of the handles turning and the images scrolling past can help anchor and slow our busy minds, and enable us dream deeper into the story that is being shared.\n\n![](https://r2.dandelion.events/2026/10/30/09/41/21/05fc5cfa-1ff9-4ca2-9452-aeaa6df65bd0/Crankie Theatre Image. Maesteg.jpg)\n\n**2. Storytelling**\n\nWe’ll be working with traditional oral storytelling - ways to remember and bring a story to life without needing a book or a script. When traditional storytellers tell a story live and in the moment, they use all sorts of fun and imaginative techniques to help their listeners enter the ‘cinema’ in their own minds, and see the story take vivid shape in their imagination. Tellers also work with the story in\n\nternally, using creative exercises to develop their deeper understanding of the themes, meanings and resonances that the tale carries in its images. With whatever story you want to bring to life, we’ll explore several of these processes over the two weekends, to help you tell your tale confidently, dynamically, imaginatively and impactfully, even if you've never told before. \n\n![](https://r2.dandelion.events/2026/10/30/12/15/41/91c24228-dd83-47af-be6b-225e787d22e0/839dd99c-f05b-4528-99e8-66fc561f772f.jpeg)\n\n**3.
